Stop Carding! – OFFICIAL STATEMENT from PSAC Local 610, Your TA and Postdoc Union at UWO

The City of London has higher rates of police carding than any Canadian city. Recently, an incident involving police carding occurred on the campus of the University of Western Ontario. We offer this as call to action for all students and the larger London community to engage their City Councillors on this issue:

We are committed to a city and a university that is inclusive, diverse, welcoming, and respectful; carding does not fit that vision. We ask that all citizens of London voice their opposition to carding and not to accept this activity being carried out against any group or individual. These types of activities create the optics that the police are our adversaries, whereas London residents and students should view the police as protecting and serving the community.

We are troubled by police routinely stopping citizens outside of police investigations to question citizens and then record and store personal data in police files. We are distressed that London residents of colour are subjected to this invasion of their privacy when the overwhelming majority of white-skinned citizens are not.

We believe that carding is a violation of our basic human rights and that is contravenes the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Our call against carding is not intended to interfere with the conducting of criminal investigations. Rather, it seeks to correct an injustice that harms relations, and damages the reputation of our police and other policing services and the city it serves.

We urge Mayor Matt Brown as well as President of the University of Western Ontario Amit Chakma to immediately cease the practice of carding. We also urge London City Council to request the London Police Services Board to eliminate the practice of carding. We call on all citizens of this city to express their views regarding this unfair practice, as London needs to remain a vibrant and welcoming community where every citizen is treated equally and justly.
