Successful Reassignment of Biology GSAs to GTAs

Recently, a number of graduate students with Graduate Student Assistantships (GSAs) approached Local 610, wondering why they were given this position, despite performing Graduate Student Assistantship.

(GTA) duties. As GSA contracts are not covered by the terms of the Collective Agreement, such students cannot benefit from guaranteed wage, the grievance process, PSAC benefits (e.g., Extended Health Plan, Financial Assistance Fund, and Food Bank), or other advantages our bargaining unit has achieved over the years.

The School of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies (SGPS) wanted to help us find the reason for these GSA assignments, agreeing that a student performing GTA duties should be classified as such and receive union benefits. The reason for these assignments was an alternate interpretation of Article 13 of our Collective Agreement regarding Appointments. Despite the understanding of many departments, graduate students beyond their typical funding period are eligible to be GTAs.

Local 610 was successful in having these GSAs reassigned as GTAs, with the help of SGPS. We welcome our new members and encourage other graduate students with GSAs to contact us.

A significant portion of our members are also members of the University of Western Ontario Society of Graduate Students.
