Celebrate the Gains We’ve Achieved in the New GTA Collective Agreement! Get Ready Now to Fight for More during the Next Round of Bargaining in 2017!

We, the GTA members of PSAC Local 610, have together achieved important gains in the Newly Ratified GTA Collective Agreement. These include:

  • A significant increase of more than 15% in Extended Health Care funding per member from the employer, from $130 per GTA to $150 per GTA
  • A significant 33% increase in total Financial Assistance funding from the employer received in first year of the Collective Agreement (from $75,000 in 2012 - 2013 to $100,000 in 2015 - 2016)
  • A significant 66% increase in total Financial Assistance funding from the employer to be received in the second year of the Collective Agreement (from $75,000 in 2013 - 2014 to $125,000 in 2016 - 2017)
  • 1% per year wage increase retroactively effective 1 September 2015
  • New language to help ensure GTAs receive paid training
  • New opportunity for graduate students in the sixth year of their programs and beyond to work as GTAs and enjoy the support and benefits of PSAC Local 610 membership. Previously, only GTAs in their funding period or in their fifth year were eligible for GTAships.
  • Renewal of the successful and popular Lead TA program (i.e., no longer a “pilot” program)
  • Establishment of a Joint Working Group to review the possibility of implementing a standardized, university-wide student evaluation process for TAs.

The Local wishes to thank and congratulate the GTA Bargaining Team, the Mobilization Committee, the Communications Committee, and all the members of PSAC Local 610!

But poverty remains a big concern for GTAs at Western, and the struggle for better working conditions continues! The new Collective Agreement is a two-year contract, as opposed to the previous one, which was three years in length. That means that we will soon have another opportunity to achieve more gains, in just two years. Start getting ready to prepare and mobilize right now! Watch out for announcements coming soon on paving the way for Collective Bargaining 2017!
