Postdoc Survey 2017

Postdocs Survey 2017: 96 out of 221 participated as of Jul 27, 2017. The summary of the survey is here

 

The new survey shows that out of 42 PDAs who responded, effectively 13 had pay reductions (4 are relative to what was planned). Some who reported a salary reduction earlier via email have not participated in the current survey. Survey results also show that the salary of international postdocs is lower than that of domestic postdocs.  

 

From the survey we see that postdocs want the university to cover the statutory deductions and benefit costs for a transition period of at least 2-years. Postdocs also want preservation of current salary to prevent future salary reduction. Considering the difference between minimum and average salary, salary preservation is critical. 

 

The survey also provides average expenditures for annual health and dental ($2648), childcare ($5676/child), child development ($1493/child), health and wellness ($656) and professional expenditures ($629). Postdocs expressed that a comprehensive benefit plan will improve productivity and reduce stress and hardship.

 

The majority of respondents can only pay max $250/year for individual and max $500/year for family comprehensive benefit plan (that includes full health, drug, dental, vision, travel, and pension benefits, as well as the spending accounts that may be used for personal needs). Benefits are prioritised as (with 3,4,5 nearly equal):

1) Comprehensive health and dental

2) Health and Wellness account

3) Professional expense

4) Childcare

5) Pension plan

 

For postdocs with children, childcare is the 2nd after comprehensive health and dental plan. Employer paid health and dental plan is strongly preferred, then flex credits spending account. Cost shared is not desired.
