PSAC Local 610 Supports Striking Educational Workers At U of T & York

Members of both CUPE 3902 at the University of Toronto and CUPE 3903 at York University went on strike during the first few days of March.

Striking educational workers at U of T include post-doctoral fellows and graduate and undergraduate students employed as teaching assistants, teaching fellows, demonstrators, tutors, markers, instructors, teaching laboratory assistants, Chief Presiding Officers, invigilators and part-time lecturers.

Currently, the U of T campus remains open and most classes are running as scheduled. Priority bargaining items for the members of 3902 include a wage increase, tuition relief, increased benefits funding, decreased workload, and improvements to working conditions.

Striking educational workers at York include contract faculty, teaching assistants, graduate assistants, and research assistants. The York campus is open, but all classes have been cancelled. Priority bargaining items for the members of 3903 include wage increases, enhanced job security for contract faculty, tuition reduction for international students, changes to hiring procedures, and post-retirement benefits.

Both of these strikes are taking place within the dual contexts of provincial austerity for Public Sector Employees and the exploitation of education labourers by university administrations that seek to cut costs off the backs of the university's most precarious workers. Both contexts fail to consider the impoverished conditions in which graduate student TAs/RAs, postdoctoral fellows, and contract faculty live and the subsequent impacts that their working conditions have on students' learning conditions.

PSAC Local 610 strongly supports CUPE Locals 3902 and 3903 in their struggles to bargain for fair contracts with their Employers. As a show of solidarity, the Local will be renting vans to travel to Toronto and to support striking workers on the picket lines at U of T and York on Friday, March 13th. Our exact time of departure is TBD, but we will be leaving early in the morning and not returning until the early evening.

If you would like to join the Local on the picket lines to show your support for CUPE Locals 3902 and 3903, please contact the Local's Communications Chair, This email address is being protected from spambots.
