Position Description: Community-Engaged Learning Program in Cuba
Number of total hours per vacancy for the term: 140
This Graduate Teaching Assistantship supports a Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) program in Cuba offered through the Spanish Program in the Department of Languages and Cultures (Arts and Humanities) at Western. The program combines academic coursework with experiential, community-based learning in collaboration with institutional partners in Cuba. The GTA will play a key role in student coordination, pre-departure preparation, on-site academic support, and post-program assessment, working closely with the course instructor and departmental administrators.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the CEL/Study Abroad Coordinator, the GTA will be responsible for the following:
Student Coordination and Support
Assisting with student communication, coordination, and support throughout the program
Supporting pre-departure advising, document collection, and required forms
Meeting with students prior to departure to review program expectations, course components, safety requirements, and cultural preparation
Program and Partner Liaison
Liaising with institutional and community partners in Cuba to support program delivery
Assisting in confirming logistics related to the academic and cultural program
Coordinating cultural activities and on-site schedules in collaboration with partners and the instructor
Travel and Logistics Support
Assisting with travel planning, including flights, accommodations, and local transportation
Maintaining communication with Western International and supporting compliance with all safety, risk-management, and travel requirements
Academic Support and Assessment
Supporting the academic components of the CEL program, including responding to student questions and guiding experiential learning tasks
Marking and providing feedback on assignments and reflective components
Assisting with grade calculation and submission for the CEL Cuba component, as directed by the instructor
Administrative Support
Providing general administrative support related to timelines, documentation, and program records
Assisting with other duties as assigned by the course instructor
